Activated coke (AC) is a carbonaceous material produced by steam activation (at approximately 900°C [1650 F]). It has high mechanical strength against abrasion and crushing. Its surface area is 150-300 m2/g, less than the conventional activated carbon but much higher than the metallurgical coal. AC comes in tablet or almond shape and is generally much larger than activated carbon as the picture and the table (below) show. Activated coke is easier to produce and hence less expensive than activated carbon. |
